Science, Scouts & Global Issues

Before the Easter holidays ScienceGrrl Glasgow teamed up with the University of Glasgow MRC Centre for Virus Research to bring some science to the 3rd Cumbernauld Scout Troop to help them get their Global Issues badge. ScienceGrrl and arbovirus researcher Claire represented the CVR with an activity highlighting the structural features of viruses. Attending scouts & leaders got a chance to build their very own viruses – safely contained in properly labelled biohazard bags following creation of course!

ScienceGrrls Sara & Carla represented SGG together with #UnsungHeroine Tu YouYou and our chlorophyll chromatography activity previously premiered at the GSC during British Science Week. Scouts got hands-on experience with separating the pigments from spinach and coloured pens, and also a helpful overview of the parasitic disease malaria (as required by Global Issues badge guideline).

Our two hour long visit concluded with Easter prizes galore as a lucky scout quiz winner took home a Giant Malaria Microbe & an Easter egg, the troop became proud new owners to a pocket microscope and the CVR colouring book and our demonstrators were thanked with Easter eggs. A successful collaboration all around!
