New leadership – from Isabel to Sara

After a year at the helm Isabel has sadly stepped down as leader and at our last meeting the role as Chapter Lead was filled by me! As discussed in the October meet-up Isabel will be taking over Joanne’s role as General Secretary while Joanne focuses on smashing her studies. Thankfully wee Stanley is still committed to his role as SGG mascot! My wish as leader is to continue the line we have recently pursued under Isabel’s leadership:

  • Engaging with children to encourage them to think of a career in science as a valid choice for everyone
  • Increasing interest in science (because the fun never stops and people should know!)
  • Targeting hard to reach communities with our events and activities
  • Developing our Unsung Heroines activities further (since as a departing gift Isabel gave us all a nice big grant for this, thanks a million!)

As a personal mission I would also like to try attracting more new members, improving meeting attendance and event volunteering. We will discuss recruitment, benefits/drawbacks of meetings being scheduled for workweek evenings vs weekends and possible strategies for attracting a wider spectrum of new members at our November meet-up. Because science is for everyone and all are welcome!
