Joan’s Memorial Fund

After Carla caught up with Heather from ScienceGrrls HQ with a lovely video call we were delighted to find out that Joan’s memorial fund had raised nearly £3,000 for ScienceGrrls Glasgow. We also have additional funds raised by predecessors of the group we are yet to use. With Joans money we have decided (and Heather fully supports this idea) to create a new bespoke activity or programme or event specifically tailored to honour Joan’s legacy.

We had a bunch of ideas thrown around in the meeting and particularly good ones too! These will all be organised into a Google Doc and we will later decide as a group in which direction we should take this.

We also wish to issue a Call for Ideas to the public across our social media accounts to get everyone involved in coming up with an idea that would appeal to a variety of groups. Joan championed Careers Hive over at Edinburgh Sci Fest and we are hoping to do something surrounding that general theme, possibly in collaboration with other groups such as Universities around Glasgow. Stay tuned!

Coming up in May we have been invited and Heather has expressed great interest in being involved in the Global Science Show. After polling the Glasgow group it seems everyone would be interested in making a short video clip for the Global Science Show in May 2021. With plenty of time to prepare we should get our thinking hats on to each make individual videos! Hopefully this will also revitalise ScienceGrrl Chapters around the UK and help us all get involved as a nationwide organisation.

Finally, last but not least, we are hoping to commit to regular content posting on the blog including book reviews and movie reviews all focusing on science topics. If you’d be interested in writing a guest blog or trialling blog writing for the group get in touch at sciencegrrlglasgow@gmail.com or @SciGrrlGlasgow on Twitter.

Stay positive and test negative
